Kyle didn’t press her again for the information. He would. She doubted he’d forget, even after a fantastic dinner by candlelight. She’d never had a romantic dinner like that with a man like him.

His house sat in the woods out of town. Like his parents’ house, he’d built it on the side of the mountain. The incredible views from the kitchen and dining room had faded as the sun went down, but not the feeling of peace.

Peace. It wasn’t something she’d even recognized she craved. But after her second glass of wine with dinner, a delicious chicken-something he’d made, and easy adult conversation, she felt it.

He sat back, sipping his wine. “I’m glad you enjoyed the dinner.”

“I’ve enjoyed the entire evening. Oh, I haven’t even asked about the newest theft. Any leads on that?” He’d spent the entire time peppering her with questions, not about her past but of things she liked, movies she’d seen, and books she’d read.

Kyle sighed and interlaced his fingers on the table. “Nope. Not a damn clue to the entire thing. It’s strange that we’ve lasted this long as a company without any theft of this magnitude, but suddenly, it’s happened twice.”

“Are the police helping?”

“Yes. As much as they can. I think Landon sweet-talked a neighbor for the footage from a security camera near the first site. We updated our cameras after that, and the second one has a clearer picture of the men, but still, nothing concrete.” He shook his head. “I’ll just have to let the police do their work. Do you want to move to the sofa?” He rose, bringing the bottle of wine and both their glasses with him to the living room. “Zoey demanded I put in this instant start fireplace.” He clicked a button on the side of the black insert. A fire blazed immediately.

“I think it’s great.”

“I wanted real wood.”

“Guess you’ll have to use your imagination.” His house reminded her of a chalet she’d seen in movies. Long, dark wooden beams met at a point far above the fireplace. Big gray stones above the thick, raw wood mantel extended all the way up. It made the room feel massive and masculine.

And the oversized, tan sofa matched perfectly. “This room is gorgeous, Kyle.”

“Thank Zoey for that too. Once I finished the construction on it last year, Zoey did her magic. She’s as much a full-on interior decorator as she is a designer. The last guest bathroom was recently finished. The entire thing took a while to complete, but it’s been worth it.”

She sat on the overstuffed sofa, sinking down into the cushions. He sat beside her, a few inches separating them.

He smelled faintly of the chicken casserole and whatever he typically used for cologne. And with three glasses of wine buzzing lightly through her system, her solitary thought was to lean in and kiss him and possibly never stop.

Kyle wove his fingers with hers. “I’d like to hear about everything, if you’re up to it.”

And those sexy feelings ran away.
